Scope: A unique four-storey all-timber building, the Macquarie University’s Clinical Education Building was an exciting project that required Concept AV to think outside the box in the delivery of the new AV systems. This purpose-built structure for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was sustainably designed by consultants Arup and executed by Buildcorp. Concept AV were responsible for the fit-out of the cutting-edge facilities within the building including a 200-seat lecture theatre, multiple collaborative learning spaces, and two Harvard Case Study style teaching spaces.
Featuring a visible cross-laminated timber core and glass façade, this project required extensive communication, collaboration, and coordination between all trades from start to finish. This was particularly relevant in the design and execution of the audio solutions across the building. Although aesthetically pleasing, the cross-laminated timber allows for limited control of reverberation. With the end-use of the spaces heavily focused on active collaboration, special acoustic design was imperative to overcome this. Concept AV’s team in the commissioning phase took great care in configuring the equipment to suit the individual space composition.
The 200-seat lecture theatre features 2 x Panasonic Projectors and 220’’ Motorised Projection screens for lecturers present. These large motorised projection screens enable all present students to have a clear view of the screen, irrespective of where they are seated in the room. Our team also installed 2 x Panasonic PTZ cameras and an Echo 360 lecture recording device to enable students to playback the lecture on their own devices at a later date.
The audio solutions in this space saw the integration of a Shure wireless microphone system with a lavalier and handheld microphone, as well as a microflex gooseneck microphone fitted into the teaching lecturn at the front of the space for presenters. 28 x QSC Ceiling Speakers were fitted into the detailed ceiling timber joinery, with the audio output further supported by 3 x Meyer Sound Compact Loudspeakers.
Harvard Case Study Spaces
Designed to mirror the case study study spaces at the internationally acclaimed Harvard College in the United States, these two spaces were fitted out with and audio-visual system that fostered collaboration and promoted enquiry-driven research and learning. Although similar to the lecture theatre, these spaces featured 1 x 150’’ Motorised projection screen with a Panasonic projector. Furthermore, in addition to the Shure Wireless Microphone System, Audio Technica MicroLine Condensor Hanging Microphones were installed. These low-profile microphones are designed for quality sound reinforcement, particularly professional recording. This therefore assists in the pickup of students within the space, allowing them to participate in the discussion, with both in-room attendees, as well as those watching the lecture recording to hear with clarity.
